‘urban isolation’ imagines skateboarding in los angeles during a global pandemic
‘urban isolation’ by russell houghten captures what an empty downtown los angeles could look like at the time of a global pandemic. the short film originally won a collaborative filmmaking competition in 2014. after six years, the video has resurfaced to help viewers imagine what los angeles could potentially turn out to be as a result of the recent ‘stay at home’ order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

LA-based filmmaker and photographer, russell houghten captures scenes of individual skateboarders coasting down empty highways and roads during broad daylight. ‘urban isolation’ is a must-watch while you are cooped up this week,’ shares skateboarding website the berrics. ‘please stay safe and healthy, and we hope to see you on the streets again soon!’
using video editing software, houghten was able to mask all the vehicles and pedestrians who were captured during the time of the shoot. at the end of the film, houghten slowly reveals the LA traffic one car at a time. combining drone and still shots, the entire film was shot in 5K resolution on RED cameras.
